Monday, July 9, 2012 - Montebello Hill Fire

Got home around 9 p.m. and was greeted my this scene. Apparently a fire started in the Montebello Hills around 2:48 p.m. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Approximately 10 acres have been burned. It's a little bit worrisome because the Montebello Hills have oil fields, which are actively being pumped by Plains Exploration and Production, a Texas-based company. As much as 55,000 barrels a month is produced here.

More drama surrounding the Montebello Hills include an attempt to build a 1,200 home project on top, from town homes to custom mansions, right next to active oil wells. The only thing hindering the project from starting is the discovery of the California Gnatcatcher, a threatened bird species, that lives in a habitat known as the coastal sage scrub. The coastal sage scrub habitat is found only in California and Baja California and is being destroyed by continuous development.  It is believed that only 15% remains undeveloped.

Help save the Montebello Hills and learn more about it.

Firetrucks, ambulances, cops blocking off the street. Firetrucks seen on top of the Montbello Hills on the top left.

Paramedics and firefighters loading bottled water into the ambulance.

Street blocked off. The Montebello Hills is the next block up.

11:25 p.m. Street's cleared. All is quiet. The air smells burnt. Adding to the L.A. smog. Exacerbating my asthma and COPD patients.
